Minor Chords ------------ A minor chord is made up of the 1st (root), b3rd and 5th degree of a major scale. In the diagrams below, we modify the five major chord forms by flatting the 3rd in each case, to make the minor chord. Cmin, C form Cmin, A form Cmin, G form Cmin, E form Cmin, D form =========== +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ | | 1 | 2 | -1 1 1 | | | 1 -3 | | 1 1 | | -5 1 1 | 1 1 1 -8 | | | | | 1 -11 +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ | | | | | | | | | | 2 | | 2 | | | | | | | | | | | | | 2 | | +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ 4 3 | | | | | | 3 4 | | | | | | | | | 3 4 | | | | | 3 | 4 | +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ | | | | | | | | | | | | 4 | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+ ----------- ----------- ----------- ----------- ----------- 5 3b 1 5 5 3b 1 5 x 1 1 5 x 3b 1 1 5 x 1 1 5 3b 1 x 5 3b 1 x 5 3b Some of these chords are less practical than others to use, but knowing them, their position and relationship to the major chords is important to the over- all understanding of the guitar. Notice that the G (4th string) and C (3rd string) are common between the 'A form' and the 'G form' minor shapes shown. By combining them we get this commonly used C minor chord pattern: +-+-+-+-+-+ | | | | 1 | -4 +-+-+-+-+-+ | | 2 3 | | +-+-+-+-+-+ | 4 | | | | +-+-+-+-+-+ ----------- x 5 3b 3b 1 x
